Gong Xi Fat Cai to all the hepcats out there! Happy new year of the Ox from the HOT-4-U camp and good tidings for what is to come. We hope your funk has been energized for the new year and the huat has been with you during this festive period.
For today’s review, I wanna review a comp that’s been slapping my face for the longest time. Yeah you’re right folks, we’re making a stand for jazz in this lunar new year and we need to make a mention of the top notch pianist, arranger and composer, Horace Silver. This man has got jazz chops coming out of his ears lah people. Whether it’s tangkap jazz or dancefloor huating, Horace Silver will deliver. He is the Todd Terry of jazz folks.. no doubt.. chord work Number One!
This compilation which was commissioned by Toshiba EMI ala Blue Note Japan – and strung together by the funky Jap folks at Jazztronik – is the proper upper and really does the keyboard maestro proud. The whole album folks, and I mean THE WHOLE DAMN THING, will make you sit up and listen big time. Covering the whole spectrum of ghetto jazz, this comp is a keeper and ITZ ORNNNNNNNN!!
What can I say about the spotlight track except that it’s 2 thumbsup on the vibe and 2 middle fingers on the attitude. The dancefloor chords are swingin’ like as if you tiok ban lat twice in a row and Andy Bey’s vocal style can more or less be classified as one of Mark Murphy’s inspirations. This is a total track through and through, that’s all I gotta say. Basically for the whole comp, it’s like 70s Dutch football lah folks, start to finish is just total tracks slapping you all the way. Hands down champion sound… just like Manchester United :)
Tangkap This!!!
