I was digging up through my pile of CDs recently and stumbled across one of my favourite songstress that always aces her repertoire with her cool styles. This songstress is none other than Patricia Barber. She’s been in the jazz circuit for almost a decade and she is rather known for her musical coolness in the way she evokes her voice, the arrangements and most importantly the vibe. Go google her out and try to suss out her older catalogs under the “Premonition” label and you’ll most certainly find that she has quite a few recordings during that mid to late 90s era.
What I really dig about Patricia is that she does her music in a way that is non pretentious, in her own cool, smoky attitude and the vibe that you get outta listening to her shite will just melt you away. She’s not your typical current jazz singer type material as she also writes a lot of her own songs and of course does covers here and there to meet market demand.
It’s hard to describe the mood of her music in plain words, but if you check this taster of the spotlight track “Persephone” you’ll know exactly what I mean. Maybe you’d find her materials boring and hard to understand, but at the same time when that certain hook comes in, or when that bass line wacks you in the soul, you’ll be suffering from goosebump madness. I think she’s the master of that specially when it comes to the slow burner ones… (oh folks… kerna personified!!)?
Up to date she’s had close to about 9 full length albums and this latest offering is under the infamous Blue Note label. It’s readily available in shops as this album was released in 2006. I am a big supporter of her sound and it’s music that always allows you to contemplate and groove mentally at the same time.
If you’re in the bistro mood to chill with close buddies and loved ones, get ready for a swell of a time as Patricia will most definitely get you in that mood will full effect. Kudos to her yoall!
